Is a picture worth a thousand words?

The picture above is what remains of an old church in Berlin, one of the few buildings (or pieces of, in this case, the bell tower) in the city that was left standing from WWII, a definate visual reminder of the history. It amazes me what a visual medium the web is and how little current eLearning seems to use it. Is it as instructional folks we feel we have to be soooo literally literate. Do we really think learning has to be full of words– if it is really “instructional” ? We learn so much from our visual world, just ask any movie director, artist, photographer… Many times images can grasp us and teach us in ways that words wouldn’t…or couldn’t.

One site I just get amazed at every time I visit is woophy.com, a world of photography site that has some of the most amazing photos from all over the world. Another very interesting site is the hbovoyeur.com. This site apparently was to intrigue HBO audiences in a promotion what great storytellers those HBO folks are. Very little words, some audio and lots of flash video say a lot about what is going on.

Okay.  Here is a rant. The conventional mindset of “information dump” and “click Next” needs to be a distant memory in the eLearning profession. (See Cathy Moore’s entries related to this) There are some exciting things going on in “other” parts of the eWorld and we (instructional desigers, developers, etc) need to get aquainted with this folks. Get invited to their parties, join some social networks,  let’s make new friends and share ideas.

Last year I had the opportunity to go to Museums on the Web.  Wow. Cool stuff…they are really focussing on creating artistic, cultural environments online….and honestly, some really great eLearning is going on here (see some examples).

Also, let’s not forget those schmancie fancy commarts folks…communication, art, media-those types…we need to look at their techniques for actually making information LOOK interesting, unique, and usable on the Web. C’mon we can do better than microsoft clip art, really. For example, see Design Interact = Great DESIGN centered sites…Also see their Interactive Design Annual and get ideas from advertising, promotions, and more…they do an awesome job of displaying information and getting the message across.

And then those Gamers. Gaming is really one of the areas that is turning heads in eLearning.  I was excited to see such interest at DevLearn07, and it is going to only get better. Serious games are really making waves and research. Even my old college haunt, Hunter College in NYC has tiltfactor, a collaboration of Computer Science, Theater, English, and Architecture students from all the CUNYs who are studying about gaming and social change. Whoa! They’re already talking…so where are the education/instructional design folks mentioned here?
